In the 1980s, the Hohe Tauern National Park was established as the first and largest national park in Austria. The 1,856-square-kilometer Hohe Tauern National Park ist mostly inaccessible in winter. In summer, however, the national park is open to visitors – with all its diversity and beauty.
The visitor center “The National Park Worlds” in Mittersill is the perfect starting point for your journey through the Hohe Tauern. Austria’s highest mountain – the Großglockner – is also in the Hohe Tauern National Park. On the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe – with a view of the Pasterze Glacier – there is a second very informative visitor center.
In addition to countless hiking and cycling trails, the national park also offers numerous natural attractions such as the Krimml waterfalls, the Weißsee glacier and the primeval forest in Rauris. You can find an overview on the page ‘day trips‘.
NEW: the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail: long distance hiking trail from Krimml via Zell am See to Großarl.
